Computer/Electronics:
The department gave us a Dell laptop and printer/fax/scanner. The laptop can hook up to the internet at the Cuduco’s house where we have internet in the room. It has a web camera and microphone. It is helpful to bring a digital camera and don’t forget the software for the laptop. The laptop has 2 USB ports, plays cds and DVDs, and has a burner. The following programs are available:

ix. MSN- sign up for an MSN account so you can use the webcam. The webcam is here and is accommodated by a USB port.

At the Cuduco house, they have a “computer room” on the second floor. There is DSL internet available through a CAT-5 wire. Basically, there is a phone wire that connects to a DSL box (dark internet box). A CAT-5 wire connects the DSL box to a Router (a light box). The router has 2 additional CAT-5 wires; one that goes to the Cuduco computer and one that is an extension wire that we bring into the room for the Dell laptop.
Sometimes, the internet does not work. I found 2 ways to resolve this issue. 1. Disconnect the power to both the DSL and Router box and then turn them back on. 2. On the Dell laptop, go to START, CONNECT TO, SHOW ALL CONNECTIONS, then press the right mouse button when on the LOCAL AREA CONNECTION and go to DISABLE, give it a few seconds and then press the right mouse button when on the LOCAL AREA CONNECTION and go to ENABLE.

Television:
The Cuduco’s have a television in the kitchen that has cable. We also have a television in our bedroom at the Cuduco’s. If you watch many movies, you can bring a DVD player and watch them on TV or watch them directly on the laptop.
Food:
The Cuduco’s will cook breakfast, big lunch, and a small dinner everyday. Breakfast (eggs, oatmeal, toast, cheese sandwich), lunch (rice, beans, avocado, salad, meat, chicken), dinner (pancakes, cheese sandwich, soup). I ate everything during my month and never got sick. They serve water that comes from bottled 5 gallon drums or boiled water. I usually picked up soda for the family. Brush your teeth with bottled water. You can also pick up food at the grocery store.
Bathrooms: There is a bathroom in the operating room area in the room adjacent to the scrub sink and one in the hospital call room. There is also a bathroom and shower with cold water only in our room at the Cuduco’s house.
