The Surgical Experience
The purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for 1st and 2nd year students to get an exposure to General Surgery and the subspecialties of General Surgery. They spend the day with the Surgery team at Elmhurst Hospital Center and experience a broad exposure to Trauma Surgery and other General surgical problems. They observe the team treat surgical patients and even participate in the operating room. They will attend rounds, see consults, and be exposed to trauma.
This program is offered on the weekends and holidays only and you are expected to spend the entire day with the surgical team. They will get in touch with the 3rd year student on call for the weekend and be escorted out to Elmhurst. Please include these students on rounds, teaching sessions, OR experiences and anything you'd find fascinating and educational. This is our way of getting students interested in Surgery early. Show your enthusiasm and demonstrate why you thought Surgery was so great when you were in medical school. Please make this a positive experience for them. These students are not to be used for scutwork!!! Be creative in what you want them to see. Often times these students will be fascinated with just rounds or watching someone get sutured up. Use the 3rd year students to chaperone these guys around the hospital. Don't forget how it was to be a 1st and 2nd year student on a clinical experience!!
